While filming Everyone’s River, Summer 2021

About Elise Mahon

I am a visual journalist who loves to get in the mud — and the lab— with scientists and the people working to create a more sustainable future for our planet. Using the power of narrative storytelling to illustrate environmental, scientific and social issues that impact communities inspires me. I hope my work both informs and emboldens my audiences.

My desire to tell people’s stories is a result of growing up as an Army brat, constantly moving and meeting new people. The exposure to so many ways of life made me realize everyone has a story to tell. While at UNC-Chapel Hill for my undergrad, I discovered photojournalism and quickly fell in love with the field. I also realized it is a powerful tool for making science and research more accessible, digestible, and relatable to the public.

I am currently a Science Writer+Visual Producer for UW–Madison’s University Communications, telling stories that explain research and introduce both the passionate scientists doing the work and the people affected by it. Previously, my work has been published by UNC Research and The Daily Tar Heel .
